Track of the Day: Gretta Ray “Passion” (2020)

Gretta Ray

Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ray turns to a new chapter in her career with her latest single and music video “Passion”.

Famously winning Triple J Unearthed High at just 18, as well as the prestigious Vanda & Young Songwriting Award for her high-rotation hit, “Drive”, Ray has taken on a new challenge in “Passion”. All-emotion, no narrative, this new pop track is entirely sensory and sharp, with velvety vocals from the young artist: “I had an addiction to all you were, and would for a while”.

An almost martial drum-beat backs Ray’s surge into new terrain, as she oozes cool charm and self-assurance with “Try to deny that rush, every time that I give you that touch”. Venturing down the path of desire and danger, “Passion” is all heat and rhythm.

On the songwriting process, Ray says:

“I think Passion is a good way of indicating that there is a different sound around the corner.

“We’ve made a pop record, but in a way that’s unique and authentic to me. It’s been a really fun challenge for me as a writer. It’s been a time of experimentation and new experiences. I think we’ve definitely gone deeper” she says.

Co-written by Kyran Daniel (G Flip) and produced by Robby De Sa (MAY-A, The Veronicas, Busby Marou), Ray is deep-in an exploratory process of collaboration and realising fast, where she wants to take her sound.

With two EPs, Elsewhere (2016) and Here and Now (2018) taking Ray to her first shows in the UK and USA opening for artists including Mumford & Sons, Gang of Youths, Lianne La Havas and James Bay, this new track is just the beginning for the budding artist.
