Track of the Day: Greta Stanley, “Kick” (2019)

Okay, admittedly we’re a little late to the party on this one, but “Kick” found its way onto our radar after a shout-out from writer Clementine Ford, and now we can’t stop listening to it, or watching the stunning video, shot in Cairns.

Born in Townsville and raised in rural Mena Creek, singer-songwriter Greta Stanley blends gorgeous vocals with a folk-y electronic pop and lyrics that get more and more under the skin with each listen. It’s a sound comparable to the Ellie Gouldings and Lordes of the world, but with a uniquely beautiful Aussie twist.

Of the track, Greta said:

“You know when you put all your emotions away, because you’re too busy, too tired to think, too scared to share them with anyone, maybe even yourself? Eventually one tiny thing will cause an avalanche it and it all comes in at once – cue breakdown. Waves of depression that hit you so hard you feel like you can’t get up, and sometimes you actually can’t get up, and that’s okay – you just have to know that in time you will – the light does come back on.”

A former triple j unearthed feature artist and receipient of the 2018 Billy Thorpe Scholarship at the Queensland Music Awards, Greta has opened for the likes of The Rubens, Woodes, Ziggy Alberts, Boy & Bear, Sarah Blasko, Didirri, and Tash Sultana. With several festival appearances under her belt too, it’s probably quite safe to say that the Greta Stanley star is on the rise, and we can’t wait to see where 2019 takes her!
