The State of Affairs: UNIFIED announces new music grant, APRA AMCOS wins case & more

This week in the music industry, the Australian music industry service provider UNIFIED announced the launch of a new grant targeting young people looking to make it into the behind-the-scenes of the music industry, APRA AMCOS successfully won a copyright legal battle with a Soulfest promoter, and the first lineup of guest speakers have been announced for the West Australian Music Conference. The Unified Grant

During his keynote speech at BIGSOUND 2016, UNIFIED founder and CEO Jaddan Comeford announced the launch of their brand new initiative “The Unified Grant”.

Consisting of  five separate grants each worth $5000, “The Unified Grant” aims to help kickstart the careers of the next generation of creative young people who are interested in working in behind-the-scenes of the music industry. Whether you’re a budding photographer, producer, web developer or journalist, the application is open to all.

Applications for “The Unified Grant” are closing on October 31,2016, with winners being announced on November,21, 2016. More information on how to apply can be found HERE.

APRA AMCOS wins copyright court case

On Tuesday September 6th, at a Federal Circuit Court hearing in Sydney,  John Denison the former promoter of Soulfest International Pty Ltd, was ordered to pay APRA AMCOS $437,000 in compensatory and additional damages for blatant infringement of the Australian Copyright Act (1968).

According to an APRA AMCOS press release, Mr Denison refused to cooperate with the organisation when they approached him on several occasions, in attempts to legally license his live music events featuring music created by APRA AMCOS members.

Mr Denison was not present at the final court hearing, where he has been ordered to pay an additional $70,000 to cover the legal costs of the case.

WAMCon announce their first lineup of guest speakers

After a successful run in 2015, with a record-breaking attendance of over 11,000 people,  WAMFest is returning to Western Australia from Thursday 3-Sunday 6th of November, 2016.

This week, WAMFest released their first lineup of guest speakers for their WAMCon event, which will be held on  4-5th of November, 2016. The 2016 installation of the WA music conference will be featuring 50 local and international guest speakers such as Gareth Liddiard from WA band The Drones,  the CEO of Pilerats and Metric Events Alex Payoff, CEO of WAM Mike Harris, and more.

This year, aspiring musicians also have the unique chance to pitch their music to Ruby Howe, the Director of triple j Unearthed, and Dorothy Markek, the Music Director of Double J radio station.
