the AU turns nine: A quick catch up with Sydney’s Bad Pony

It’s been an eventful year for Sydney’s Bad Pony; the boys from the Inner West took their sounds abroad as well as pounding the pavement on the local scene. 2016 buoyed Bad Pony on immensely too, off the back of successful appearances at Music Matters in Singapore and multiple Australian shows, this year has given the band the perfect opportunity to continue to build upon such strong foundations laid.

We’re lucky to have the guys performing at our ninth birthday party in Sydney this Wednesday, particularly looking forward to seeing their latest single “Deficiency” given the live treatment. A killer track, the single has seen Bad Pony embrace a new musical direction while keeping that fun essence that endeared so many to them through last year will in tact.

As for what the group is getting up to with the end of 2017 more and more on the horizon, vocalist Jarred Young lets us in on how their debut album is coming to fruition.

“We’ve booked out some time in January to write and record an album. We’ll be out in the sticks with no reception and no distractions. I can’t wait, It’ll be the first time any of us have worked on a full length! We’ve never been ones to pigeonhole ourselves stylistically so I’m intrigued to see what comes out.”

The band has definitely clocked frequent flyer points this year, while logging in the hours to work on the Deficiency EP. As Young notes, the new direction for Bad Pony is darker than previous releases, but it’s all pointing to great things ahead.

“2017 has been a pretty big one! In the last year we’ve been to Singapore, America, Canada and have toured Australia a number of times, we’ve only had a break over the last month or so which has been nice. We’ve had lots of time to write and put an EP together. Musically I think we’ve headed in a much darker and heavier direction than we ever have. We’ve got a new single ready to go that’s definitely the darkest thing I’ve ever written, both lyrically and musically. I’m excited to see how it’s received!”

Bad Pony performs live at the AU review’s 9th Birthday Party in Sydney on Wednesday, August 30th at The Lansdowne. RSVP to attend for free here!
