the AU interview: Wayne "The Train" Hancock (Texas)

Wayne ‘The Train’ Hancock will return to Australia next March, just eight short months after his last successful visit. Wayne makes music fit for any road house. With his unmistakable voice, The Train’s reckless honky-tonk can move the dead. If you see him live, you’ll surely work up some sweat stains on that snazzy Rayon shirt you’re wearing. We spoke to Wayne about his music, his time in Australia and much more:

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us Wayne! We’re excited to have you back in Australia so soon after your last visit. What are some of your memories / highlights of your last trip here?

I enjoyed everything, if I listed everything there wouldn’t be room enough for all the answers – I really enjoyed the Grease Pit in Adelaide though.

For those who may have seen you last time, what can we expect from your show that we may not have enjoyed last time around?

A different lead guitar player and I’ll have lots more energy since it’s much farther out from my motorcycle accident.

For those who have never seen you before, how would you sum up your show?

Insane Fun, All the Time!

Your music speaks to the history of music – though most specifically the music from America. From your experiences in Australia, why do you think the music of America has resonated so well with audiences so far away from the place where that music was born?

Maybe it’s because my music isn’t top 40, you have to go looking for it, because it’s not mainstream you have to be a bit of a treasure hunter to seek it out, maybe people like it because you have to seek it out. Nobody really plays like we do.

Let’s say we take Ride and then look back to Thunderstorms and Neon Signs… How has your writing process changed between the records and how has the recording process changed? Or has it?

The only thing that’s changed is that I’ve gotten 20 years older. Really just about two decades.

In a place like Austin, you’re completely surrounded by music – both new, old and renewed – what gets you excited about a new artist?

If they’re extremely talented and not bound by money.

What’s next for you after your Australian tour? What’s 2015 holding for you and what’s happening musically?

I’m looking to make a new album, I have a killer five piece band – first time for that and we’re just going to keep on playing.

If I was a fan of your music, what are three albums that I must listen to (other than your own material)?

I don’t know, I just listen to my own material! But I guess if I have to, Bob Wills The Tiffany Transcriptions, and any Hank Williams and Gene Krupa.

Being from Texas, we need to know: Where’s the best BBQ in Texas?

That’s a difficult question because in all parts of Texas, there’s different types of BBQ and it depends on what you like.

And what’s the best hot sauce?

I’m a connoisseur of the milder foods so I do not feel qualified to answer that question.
