the AU interview: Tom Lanyon of CERES (Melbourne)

Ahead of this weekend’s Australia Day fundraiser at the Reverence Hotel in Footscray, Melbourne, supporting Oxfam and The Refugee Council, we’re catching up with a bunch of the bands playing at the event! Next up is Tom Lanyon, the guitarist from Melbourne’s CERES.

Tell us who you are, what band you’re from and where your band is from!

My name is Tom Lanyon and I sing and play guitar in Melbourne band CERES.

What is your latest single/album and where can we get it? Plug whatever you need to music wise…

We have a re-release of our EP called ‘Luck’ on vinyl coming out end of January. Then our debut full length record called ‘I Don’t Want To Be Anywhere But Here’ is coming out April 4th. Both of these bad boys are getting released by our friends at Hobbledehoy Record Co.

Tour wise, what do you have in store for 2014?

We’ve got a tour booked over the March/April period to spread the good word about the new record, and to hopefully make some new friends. Can’t wait for it. First time we’ll be getting out of Melbourne with the band. Been a long time coming.

How would you best describe your music?

Kind of emo-rock I guess? Pretty woosy really. We like to say we hark back to the golden era of 90s emo, but I’m not too sure about that anymore. Just think of Jimmy Eat World, but not as good.

How would you best describe your live show?

I think we are heavier than on record. Hope we are. It get’s pretty sweaty and visceral I guess. We try and make it good to look at and to listen to. I used to think we should be this moody band that would out and not say anything, then after the last song just say “thanks” and drop the mic and all that. But we aren’t that cool. So mostly I say something stupid a few times, and no-one laughs, and I accidentally drop the mic and leave. I apologise a lot on stage. It’s not as endearing as it sounds.

What can we expect from this set in particular? Anything special planned?

Well, our drummer has been away for a month and will literally drive from the airport to the pub, so hopefully the special thing from our set will be that our drummer shows up and we don’t forget how to play the songs. I’ll try not to say sorry too much, but I can’t promise anything.

Anyone else you’re looking forward to seeing on the day?

Oh boy, yes. Every other band? In particular Luca Brasi, Sinking Teeth, Stockades and Regrets. But so stoked to be getting around them all.

– What do you think is the perfect way to spend Australia day?
Probably what we’ll be doing. Beers, bands, babes (Rhys in our band). What more do you want mannnn??

You’re performing at an event that is supporting Oxfam and The Refugee Council… what does this mean to you?

I’m so happy we get the opportunity to be a part of this weekend. To help out in this tiny way is pretty cool. I think what Tom and Anastasia have done to raise awareness of the efforts of Oxfam and The Refugee Council is important, and we are just so stoked to be apart of it.

Since we all just voted in the hottest 100, what was your favourite song for 2013?

I didn’t vote! I know, I know. But if I did vote, it would probably be a song by Iron Chic or something…
