the AU interview at SXSW: Aaron Bruno of AWOLNATION (Los Angeles) talks touring, surfing, the new record "Run" and more!

the AU review sat down with Los Angeles based group AWOLNATION‘s frontman Aaron Bruno while at SXSW earlier this month. We talk about the madness of SXSW, “it’s kind of like how life on the road is in general… I think people come together at South by and experience a little bit of what it’s like for us touring folk on a day to day basis…”

We go to to talk about the new AWOLNATION record Run which was released earlier this month on Red Bull Records, “I worked really hard on the record and I’m extremely passionate about it, and I made this record for true music lovers and our fans, first and foremost. The record takes you on a journey and I hope people love it as much as I do.”

“I’ve been working on this record my whole life I feel like… I always wanted to make a sophomore follow up… I’ve never had an audience that was anticipating anything I’ve done before, so this was the first time that I had confidence that people were – at the very least – going to listen to what I’d done. It gave me a lot of artistic freedom to go as crazy as I wanted to and really put it on the line.”

And as for the resulting craziness? How does it compare to his last effort? “Hopefully I’ve gotten better as a producer. I know I’ve pushed the boundaries a bit more with the sound of the record. It’s definitely a more brutal, heavier sounding record. A little bit darker.”

Run is out now through Red Bull Records.
