the AU interview at Ottawa Bluesfest: Max Kerman of Arkells (Ontario) on crowd reception at live shows & more!

the AU review’s Larry Heath had the opportunity to speak with frontman Max Kerman of Canadian alternative rock band, Arkells at Ottawa Bluesfest. He spoke highly of his fan base and made an interesting observation on the crowd ratios. Since their release of their third studio album, High Noon, their music has been well-received by their music followers.

“We’ve got a really good group of fans. There’s some hierarchal thing. The vibe of the shows sort of developed in the last five or six years,” He continues. “It’s pretty even guy to girl [ratio]- maybe even more girls than guys. In the past there’s been more guys than girls and everyone is there to sing and dance and that’s the whole spirit of the thing.”

After releasing their record not too long ago, Arkells managed to tour internationally to promote High Noon. This not only taught the band how to perform new material live but it also gave them the opportunity to make a name for themselves in other countries too. “We know how to play them [new songs] now. We toured Michigan when our third record came out two weeks after and we didn’t know how to play the songs well,” He says. “People didn’t know the songs and this time around, we made a considerable effort to work in Europe and the US as much as we could because we have a lot more work to do there but also it’s just a good opportunity to play a lot and get through the set together. After six months the record came out and we finally did a Canadian tour in February and it was the most satisfying tour.”
