SXSW Music Interview: The Gooch Palms (Newcastle) on making their new album, touring abroad & more!

Seeing The Gooch Palms take to the Aussie BBQ stage at SXSW this year was a treat; especially after seeing how well the Novocastrian duo was received at the venue last year. Both Leroy and Kat bring such an eccentric and brilliant charm to their live shows that, when they mention they locked around 130 live gigs under their belt in 2015 alone, we’re not surprised.

The Gooch Palms sat down with Larry to have a chat about their last 12 or so months abroad, which not only saw them take in multiple gigs internationally, but also saw them record their highly anticipated new album.

“We recorded a new album in the middle of last year, it’s coming out in the middle of this year, in June.” Kat says. “It’s been cool playing the new songs; we’ve just sent out the recording to our friends and to people have good taste in music, to see what the new single should be. They’ve chosen the one that’s the hardest for us to play live, so we’re like, ‘God damn it!’ – it’s looking like it’s going to be that one, which we’re going to release soon.”

When they returned for some incredibly well-received shows in Australia recently,  it was testament to the amount of hard work The Gooch Palms had been throwing into the formulation of a fire live show and some solid work in studio.

“It was awesome.” Leroy says of their brief return home. “One or two things could have happened; everyone could have forgotten about us or everyone would love us even more. Luckily, it was the second option – it was awesome! There were so many people at every show! I mean, we were so happy and it’s great to know that all the hard work has started to pay off.”

“It’s just confidence, it’s with everything you do in life.” he says. “We played 130 shows last year…we just went through everything you could possibly go through as a band, in a year. You get better at dealing with stuff. We’re around each other 24 hours a day so we don’t even need to think about it on stage, we just know what each other is going to do.”
