Earlier this month, we sat down with Swedish group Dungen backstage at Primavera Festival in Barcelona. During the interview, we spoke at length about their connections to Australia and Perth band Tame Impala – who the group recently shared the stage with in Brooklyn and here in Spain.
Comparisons between the two bands have often been raised, with Dungen preceding the Australian psych rock group by many years. Earlier in the interview, they mentioned that Nicholas Allbrook, who used to play in Tame Impala, told them he was front row for their show in Perth in 2006 (the only time they’ve toured Australia, with Wolfmother and the Tucker B’s).
Shortly after that tour in 2007, the band revealed to us that Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker got in touch with the band and sent them through their latest material, asking them to mix the record. The band’s response? “No, we don’t have to mix it! What should we do? Just put it out! It’s amazing as it is!” After a short pause, we ask if they regretted the decision not to mix the record, they laughed it off, but reiterated on how amazing the band’s success has been, running parallel to what they’d been doing, rather than in competition to.
