What music or artists inspired you?
Mark Knopfler, Erik Satie, Sigur Ros, Antony & The Johnsons, Bob Dylan.

How did you get started?
I realised quickly that I wasn’t ‘cut out’ to work in a ‘normal’ job. I did the whole university/’normal’ job thing and felt empty trying to be something I wasn’t. Having experienced all the ‘artistic differences’ and tensions that go with playing in a band, I decided to go solo.

I acquired a lot of engineering and production skills along the way and ended up producing my own album. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 16, but only started writing music and singing in public in recent years.

How would you best describe your live show?
The shows are dynamic. They can veer from being a one-man-and-his-acoustic-guitar affair, to being a full on five-piece rock show. It wouldn’t be unusual to see me let rip on electric guitar and then follow it by playing tin whistle on a down-tempo old Irish trad-like tune.

I like to have a bit of banter with the audience in between songs to acknowledge their presence. I also like to do a couple of tribute songs by artists who have influenced me. I like to try out one or two tunes that I might not have released yet to gauge an audience’s reaction.

What shows do you have coming up?
The two biggest shows I’ll be doing this year are Electric Picnic and The Big Viking Picnic. Electric Picnic is Ireland’s biggest outdoor festival. The line-up is always brilliant. Aside from performing, I usually get to see some of my favourite acts. Last year, I got to see Future Islands and Interpol after I’d finished my show.

Tell us about your latest release:
My latest release is a song called “Is It True?” from my debut album Somewhere Beyond. The track was chosen as a BBC Radio 6 top track of 2015. The song features the voices of my twelve year old niece, my film director brother and yours truly. I play all the instruments. The animation video that accompanies the song can be found below:
