Single of the Day: Mary Handsome “Banksia” (2016)

Brisbane does good pop. I don’t think anybody is disputing this fact but it definitely should merit some more mentions here and there. I don’t know what it is about bands coming out of the Sunshine State in recent years, but they’ve been churning out some great material that has been piquing the interest of more and more people around the country and it’s never been more rightly deserved, in my mind.

Mary Handsome are a band who sits well in these ranks of Brissy musicians doing some fun things with guitars, lively grooves and a tailormade summertime energy. Their debut EP Mary Handsome (out now, FYI) is a collection of some indie-pop jams that are easy to kick back to, with current single “Banksia” possibly being one of the record highlights.

There’s something nostalgic about this tune; for me, it takes me back to first year uni, seeing the likes of the John Steel Singers and Alpine for the first time back in the day. I think for any Australian music lover who’s been particularly supportive of local music, they’re going to know what I mean as they listen through this track. It’s carefree, the vocal is easy to listen to and the general atmosphere of the song is a playful one.

Have a listen for yourself!
