Single of the Day: Holy Holy “That Message” (2017)

It’s nearly here. The second album, PAINT, from the divine Holy Holy, set for release on February 24th. Luckily, the duo Oscar Dawson and Tim Carroll realised we couldn’t hold out another week, and they’re giving us their third single – another nibble of the communion wafer before the big release.

The single is layered, textured, rich with synth and guitar. Carroll‘s ethereal vocals repeat the mantra of, ‘Let it go, let it go, let it go…‘, creating a sound that delivers the HOLY HOLY sound we know, but shows their progressions as musicians. Carroll says, “The only guiding principle we stuck with was that we wanted to push ourselves and take some risks.  It was a challenging process and as is often the case, I think the restrictions pushed us into new and interesting territories.”

The complexity of the music and the arresting and spellbinding collection of songs could be considered a sonic expressionist painting – the cover art, a striking artwork by James Drinkwater, confirms this. Inspired by this, Holy Holy and James Drinkwater have announced a collaboration ‘Painting to PAINT’ – where local Australian artists take songs from the album to canvas. Still to come are artists Ben KenningChris Horder and Lottie Consalvo – it’s going to be a treat to see what they deliver.
