December 2nd is getting closer and closer, which means that the new Childish Gambino album Awaken, My Love! is also soon to be upon us. We’ve already been hit with a taste of what to expect courtesy of “Me and Your Mama” and it’s exciting; Donald Glover’s intelligence as an artist and as a writer has taken him in a vastly different direction than that of because the internet and the STN MTN/Kauai mixtape, jumping into some deep funk and soul influences over the raps that previously brought him acclaim.
“Redbone” is another flaming example of this new chapter for Gambino – drenched in soul, fleshed out with falsetto and eases back with a groove that is insatiable to listen to. If this is going to be the Childish Gambino fans are to get used to for the foreseeable future then I think it’s safe to say we’re in for a good time.
