New Music Video: Tonight Alive – “Listening” (2012)

I’ve always found it a little awkward when Tonight Alive tried to include plot in their videos because it always seemed like they tossed it in as an afterthought. Thankfully, the punk-rockers have forgone any elements of a storyline in their latest music video, with the focus one hundred percent on performance.

What the video really does is perfect all the strong elements of the band’s live style, and smooth over the weaker aspects. Having been to their shows before, it’s easy to identify the details that have been mis-remembered (Jenna couldn’t headbang that much and sing at the same time, for example), or emphasised (Jenna’s body language and the checked shirt tied around her waist). The band appears energetic and polished, but not inauthentic.

The final product will no doubt introduce new fans to the band, while the older ones should be able to appreciate the refined and improved style of video. “Listening” is also one of the best songs on What Are You So Scared Of? so I think this was an excellent choice for a video. What do you think?
