Each week at the AU we work hard to dig up the best new music from across Australia and beyond. This week is no different with ten brand new tracks added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Whether you’re chasing something to soundtrack the commute, or just looking for something new, we’ve got you covered.
This week AU favourite Fanny Lumsden takes out Track of the Week with “Mother’s Eyes” her gorgeous new single, the latest from her forthcoming new album Traditions – out October 30th. The album explores themes that are quite personal to Lumsden, and “Mother’s Eyes” with its contemplative exploration of ageing, identity, and matriarchal connection, is no exception. The single is delivered with real warmth, and thanks to the blend of gentle banjo and some lovely pedal steal, it ends up being quietly impactful, and quite emotive thanks in no small part to the sentiment inspiring it.

“Half Asleep Behind The Wheel” is the latest single from Fremantle indie rock group Ra Ra Viper. Featuring fellow West Aussies Little Guilt, the single is taken from the group’s forthcoming sophomore album Ra Ra, which is out next month. Shimmering guitars, meet hypnotics rhythms, and textured synths to deliver a sound that blurs the lines between indie rock and dream pop. For the most part it’s quite understated and quietly introspective, and it really hits the spot. There’s something really captivating about it, whether it’s the dual vocals or the way it slowly builds.
Also added to the playlist this week are new singles from Toronto singer-songwriter Teagan Johnston (“Broken Bones, Country Roads”) and London multi-instrumentalist and recent Domino signee Alex Burey (“Unspoken”).
“Broken Bones, Country Roads” comes from Johnston’s new album, Big Time, which is due out October 2nd, and sees the Toronto artist lean into alt country territory. The track which was written in a hospital waiting room, with only a copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for company, channels dreams of a carefree summer blasting along country roads into a 3-minute ear worm.
Meanwhile, “Unspoken”, Burey’s debut release on Domino, is a tender and reflective introduction to the London artist. It’s full of warmth, soft percussion and some gorgeous sax lines, which give proceedings this lovely dreamy, hazy yet intimate vibe. It’s a beautiful listen.
“That Night” is the latest single from Woman, the new album from Los Angeles based singer-songwriter V Torres. Inspired by the ‘exhilarating, terrifying moment when friendship begins to blur into something more’ track is full of energy and swagger with Torres diving into rockier territory. It’s a vibe!
“Krautrock” is the latest single from Sydney/Eora art rock outfit Kitty of the Valley. The track was the first song they ever wrote together as a band and has become a firm live favourite, so presumably it was more than time for it to get the studio treatment. There’s a lot going on across the 5 minute run time – big vocals, motorik rhythms, jangling soaring guitars – it’s just non-stop. It’s really no surprise why its become a live favourite.
Also added to the playlist this week is “Everybody Wants You”, the debut single from up-and-coming Adelaide five-piece Sister Moonshine. The single is inspired by the idea of a partner becoming insecure and possessive on a night out, exploring ‘how it feels to watch your partner or love interest being courted by other people, whilst pretending you’re cool about it…’ It’s full of attitude and swagger, with some lovely guitar work throughout, but it’s the powerhouse vocals from frontwoman Claudia Prue’s that really grab the attention here.
“White Flag” is the focus single from NAUNGU URUI, the debut mixtape/EP from the NIMA-nominated artist ZIPPORAH. The single is a musical/lyrical exploration of emotional warfare and the vulnerability and courage that’s required to let go and move on. It makes for an empowering listen, with a bold sound, powerful vocals and a subtle theatricality. If you’re at the NIMAs in Darwin this weekend you’ll be able to catch ZIPPORAH performing tomorrow night. Bigsound attendees will also be able to find her at a handful of showcases next month, so keep an eye out!
Finally, this week we have also added new tracks from London-based Australian-fronted group Telegraph Hill (“Angelique”) and Boorloo/Perth-based singer-songwriter Blank Instrument (“Green and Blue”).
