After a week away on the British seaside at The Great Escape we’re back this week with a bumper edition of our Discovery playlist this week with 14 new tracks added to Spotify and Apple Music.
Our Track of the Week is “tell me something”, the latest single from Brisbane-born, Sweden-based singer-songwriter Hazlett. The single is Hazlett’s the third release of 2025 and continues to tease his forthcoming sophomore album, Last Night You Said You Missed Me – set for release September 12th on Nettwerk.
The single is an evocative exploration of heartbreak and acceptance. Or as Hazlett describes it, the “untangling that happens” when a relationship ends. No surprises then that it’s an emotive song, with Hazlett’s soulful vocal and lyricism taking centre stage. There’s some beautifully woozy guitar work too that really just emphasises the track’s emotive undercurrent. Hazlett will be hitting festival stages across Europe and the US throughout the Northern Hemisphere summer, including supporting Noah Kahan at London’s BST Hyde Park on the 4th July. We’ve been champions of Sydney’s Salarymen since their first singles, and they are not far from releasing their debut album. “Truth” is a hot take on the world of misinformation, especially from significant world leaders. It’s stacked with the gorgeous harmonies and exquisite guitars that we are used to from the duo, with an incisive message as well. About the track, lead singer Renee writes “…This track is our comical take on people who get sucked into political cults and believe everything they see on the internet.”. Don’t be like those people. Check out the sweet video too.
“Land” is the latest single from London-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dominie Hooper. The single is her first for independent Scottish label Lost Map Records, and explores themes of magic, metamorphosis and ritual. It’s compelling and dramatic, with that almost snarling cello, the shamanic backing vocals, and then that beautiful central vocal from Hooper. With more music to come in 2025, we’re excited to hear what’s coming next.
Misty Harlowe is a singer/songwriter from rural Victoria and has found herself writing and recording in Nashville, Tennessee. “Welcome to the Wild West” weaves stories of heartache, fortitude and desire, infused with a nostalgic Western-film feel. There are fiddles, banjos, pedal steels, and a solid nod to the great Johnny Cash. It’s a cracking tune. She’s released a fabulous video to go with, so do check it out.
If you’ve ever told a friend that you fancy them, but were rebuffed, then “Redo” from Chuck Sics is the track for you. From Eora, Chuck Sics is one of those crazily talented multi-instrumentalists. He played all the instruments on this one, and recorded it on his home studio. This is his debut single, and what an impressive debut it is. The psychedelia feels are woven through this with a driving beat and gorgeous guitar lines. “The song is about the aftermath of confessing love for a friend who doesn’t share those feelings, and wishing everyone could forget it happened. Wishing you could disappear, or do it over again. The shame of rejection surely drives this need to forget it ever happened, but in the song I also tried to address that the way I dealt with the rejection at that time had not been fair.”. Chuck Sic is one to watch – more tunes are promised as the year goes on.
“Spanish Moss” is the new single from Sydney-based singer-songwriter and multidisciplinary artist Maia Jelavic. The piano led track, is the second release from her forthcoming debut solo album. Whilst a bit of slow-burner, it’s an absorbing slice of emotive alt-folk, full of atmosphere, and with Jelavic’s rich, textured vocal taking centre stage. Jelavic will be launching the single tonight at Sydney’s Mixtape Brewing. Entry is free, and the music kicks off at 730pm, with support sets from HackySack & Grace Turbo.
Also added to the playlist this week is “Experiments”, a new folk-inspired track from Wilby, the indie-rock project of Nashville-based songwriter and artist Maria Crawford. Poignant, introspective, and full of authenticity, “Experiments” explores the guilt and vulnerability of bringing someone along on a messy healing process. There’s a bit of country tinge to this one, with the steel guitar bringing the emotion, along with that beautiful vocal.
“Fizzy” is the latest single from Melbourne/San Francisco alt-pop artist and producer ROHAN. Full of nostalgic charm, “Fizzy” is something of a pop-punk-infused break-up anthem, that aims to capture the good, the bad, and the down right messy of a relationship’s end. Whilst there’s a slight slacker vibe to it all, the track does live up to its name, with guest drummer Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta, Lizzo, Thundercat) bringing the energy.
Georgie Winchester, from Wonnaura/Maitland has teamed up with Nick Saxon, who used to be in Newcastle’s Benjalu, to record “Lighthouse”. The track was written by the pair in Newcastle lighthouse, where Georgie had a writing residency last year. It’s a song about long distance love and the light from the lighthouse is used as a metaphor for that. Georgie is a shining light with her folk songs, and we were big fans of Benjalu when they were active, so it’s an exciting pairing.
Davey Lane has released “Over, Over & Out”, the second single off his upcoming fourth solo album, Finally, A Party Record. As always, fabulous guitars (a 12 string in this one), heartfelt lyrics and with a slightly nostalgic feel to it, it’s a solid reminder of why we are such fans of Davey Lane. He’s been busy of late – touring with You Am I and performing with legendary U.S. singer-songwriter Todd Rundgren.
Also added to the playlist this week are “Find A Way”, the latest single from Harrison Storm; the debut single from LA six-piece and new Rough Trade signees The Soph.
Finally, we’ve added two premieres from earlier in the week from Bryan Estepa (“Version of Me”) and LAHGO (“Bitter”).
