New Music Discoveries 14th April: The Southern River Band, West Thebarton, and more

After a week off for Bluesfest (and Easter) we’re back with another twelve new tracks added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music; including two tracks we’re premiered the music videos for last week.

This week’s Track of the Week is “The Streets Don’t Lie” from award winning WA rock band The Southern River Band. It’s a song about the mixed fortunes of old school mates and the band have dialled the swagger up to the max. It’s loud, it’s raucous, it’s a damn good time.

The band are heading out on tour in May in support of the single. They’re kicking things off in Fremantle on May 7th, touring through WA and then heading over east to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in June. You can grab tickets to all the shows HERE.

Brooklyn Duo Water From Your Eyes have released “True Life”. They certainly have an experimental bent to them, and the band have referenced one of the great rock gods in the track: “The bridge was initially meant to contain lyrics from ‘Cinnamon Girl,’ but Neil Young’s lawyers wouldn’t let us use them. Now they are about how Neil Young wouldn’t let us use his words. The rest of the song deals with life and assorted complications of the material world.

“What Hurts The Most” is the upbeat new single from the Newcastle punk sweethearts, Trophy Eyes. The release is accompanied by the announcement of their fourth record Suicide and Sunshine, out 23 June. It’s about learning to say goodbye under the most difficult circumstances and showcases frontman John Floreani’s compelling lyricism and powerhouse vocals.

LT (Leanne Tennant) is back with “Act Your Age” – the track was written with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) and Edwin White (Vance Joy). Leanne describes it as “an indie-pop, dance rhythmically charged bop”,  and we think she is bang on the money there.

“George Michael” is the new single from Adelaide’s West Thebarton. It’s a euphoric track celebrating those moments where everything is bright and rosy, all your troubles are washed away. They’ve announced a tour in May in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne – get details HERE

“Bones” is the recent single from Perth group Yo Yo Sun. It’s their third track of the year so far, with another set for release in a few weeks. Listening to “Bones” it’s impossible not to immediately be gripped by that vocal. An atmospheric and powerful all round performance that highlights the trio as ones to watch.

The Tallest Man on Earth, aka Kristian Matsson has today released Henry St., his first album in four years. The focus track “Looking For Love” is about stubborn optimism, and features some beautiful guitars.

Hailing from Townsville in Queensland, Comfort Royale have been winning audiences from much further afield than their north Queensland home. “Worth It” has a hazy summer-infused feel to it, and it features such gems as a yangqin and theremin, and the iconic synth from the early ’80s, the Juno 60.

“Stand And Turn Away” is the charming new single from Atlanta’s Gringo Star. The track, from the band’s new album On and On and Gone (out June 2nd), sees the band embrace all things Americana. Recorded live, crammed close together in their studio, “Stand And Turn Away” turns up the charm and those campfire sing-a-long vibes.

Finally, we have two premieres from last week, from Lucy Gallant and Franjapan.
