Adelaide alt-pop singer / songwriter My Chérie has just released Life is Short & Life is Long, an EP that explores identity, hope and healing. We teased an earlier single “Dishes in the Sink” back in August this year. The EP also includes “Life Is”, alongside the powerful new focus single, “Box of Pencils”.
“Box of Pencils” is very much a part of My Chérie’s psyche, dealing with themes of depression and self-doubt, contrasted with feelings of release and letting go of expectations, The track has a beautiful and layered sonic landscape that enhances Chérie’s ethereal voice.
“Box of Pencils” is more than just a personal story, it speaks to anyone who’s struggled with expectations that have been imposed upon them. Chérie almost didn’t release it as it was so personal. She reflects on the meaning of the song:
“Whether it’s choosing the ‘safe’ job, leaving a relationship, or stepping into the unknown, we all grieve the futures we were conditioned to long for. I hope this song feels like a warm hug in people’s moments of uncertainty, and that my vulnerability brings some love into the world.
Life is Short & Life is Long is a collection of songs that are both intimate and expansive. Not just a collection of songs, but a statement of self-trust, transformation, and creative bravery.
My Chérie is celebrating the release of the EP with a couple of upcoming gigs. She’s assembled her live band for a headline EP Launch at Nexus Arts on November 22, and just a week later, on November 29, she’ll share the stage with global icons Lenny Kravitz and JET, performing as part of the BP Grand Final. To cap off a busy year, it’s just been announced that My Chérie will also perform at Womadelaide in 2026.
