Music Video of the Day: Zack Boone “Beautiful” (2015)

Irish songwriter Zack Boone has only recently landed on my radar, following an email sent to me a few weeks ago with the subject line simply reading: Take five minutes to listen to this guy. I’m glad I did.

The song is called “Beautiful”; a chill, delicate acoustic number, it’s a love letter that isn’t drowning in soppy lyricism and the music video is, in its simplicity, a moving visual accompaniment. The arrangement, while sparse, offers a warm soundscape and the melodies are crafted with the same clever thought applied. As Boone sings, his voice wavers at certain points but it only adds to the fragility of the message he’s getting across. It’s gentle, dreamy and doesn’t need a full sweeping string section or indie-folk band to get any ultra-romantic vibe across.

Featured in the 2014 film Patrick’s Day (a film our sister site The Iris covered during SXSW ), it’s cool to see the tune and by extension, Boone’s music reach more people. The music video for “Beautiful” demonstrates the all-encompassing reach of love and affection between people and, given Ireland’s vote for the legalisation and recognition of same-sex marriage in 2015, acts as a poignant commentary on how perspectives are (finally) starting to change.
