Live Review: The Bombay Royale ignites a Saturday night at Adelaide’s OzAsia Festival

The Bombay Royale are one of those bands who are impossible not to feel affected by. Their positivity that drives each and every song they perform permeates through the crowd effortlessly – you want to dance if you’re not a dancer, you want to sing, even if you cannot understand the language.

The dynamic the band exerts, from the rhythm to the horn section, not to mention the duo vocal of Parvyn Singh and Shourov Bhattacharya, is also well honed and great to watch; as a music fan, this is part of the thrill of a great live show. Watching the performers having so much fun performing the material that’s brought joy to so many.

When it came to the headliners, The Bombay Royale spun out a masterclass of bringing an internationally renowned show through to a smaller venue, to a crowd full of faces who may have been seeing them for the first time. Consummate professional entertainers, they mixed equal amounts of exaggerated comedy in with their technically on point musical output. Singh’s voice in particular was on gorgeous form, her high end range piercing through and turning heads.

Supported by Adelaide’s Shaolin Afronauts, this OzAsia Festival show was held at the Nexus Arts Centre, a hub of festival activity over the next few weeks. The crowd was of a mixed age demographic and even though the venue battled some poor sound tech issues, The Bombay Royale and the Shaolin Afronauts alike managed to pull together shows they should be proud of, considering.

The addition of The Bombay Royale to the OzAsia Festival is a sign of the festival’s curation itself continuing to branch out and throw some spice into an already well formed mix. Here’s hoping they continue to program acts like this in the future.
