LANKS on his debut EP Viet Rose & getting through BIGSOUND without ‘being a dick’

Melbourne artist LANKS returned to Brisbane for BIGSOUND this year with a brand new single in “Holla” ready to be brandished and a debut EP in Viet Rose ready to be hyped. Ahead of his showcase, Larry sat down with LANKS (aka Will Cuming) to chat about the development of his music and his live show since this project began.

“I had never performed without a guitar in my hands actually, until Splendour this year,” he says. “That was a really new experience for me. I’ve been performing shows and playing guitars since I was 10 years old, so that’s a while now. I’ve done 120 LANKS shows or something already and it’s only been going for two years, the project. For me, I also wasn’t a singer until I started the LANKS thing, really. It was just about getting lots of chances to stand in front of people and sing and show what I did and then learn. Every time you play, you learn a little bit more and then you just improve as you go.”

With Viet Rose due out next month (October 14th), LANKS describes the way the music for the record has come together and how his approach has changed any.

“I’m a really song-driven person,” he says. “It’s [about] whatever that song needs. I think, naturally, when you work on music over a period of time, there’s a sort of sound or something that ties these things together. In the end, I settled on these six tracks that very strongly represent the last 12 months of my life as an artist; they really work together as an EP and it felt right, the story that they told for me personally. It feels really good and the timing felt right to put these together and bookend it.”
