Louis The Child are the Chicago duo that have been tearing up the EDM scene since they were teenagers. Now just in their early 20s, Robby Hauldren and Freddy Kennett boast over 5.2 million monthly Spotify listeners, collaborations with Skrillex, Wafia, Quinn XCII and Chelsea Cutler; and even helped to pen the Chainsmokers’ hit “Closer”.
The pair first met in 2012 at a Madeon concert and soon after discovered they were each messing around with music production, reaching out to team up. Being underage for the club scene didn’t hinder their success in the slightest.
“We were more focused on like putting out music that we were making and putting it out on the internet, trying to like send it to different blogs and get our music like popping there before we like tried to do [club nights],” said Freddy.
“We just thought it… would get us to play bigger shows. Like you go play a show to a hundred people and maybe you get like five to 10 fans, but you put out a great song, you could get like a thousand fans across the internet and then just kind of keep building on that.”
They built this avid online audience which landed them the opener spot for Madeon and now eclipsing their idol in listeners. The success of this pair is undeniable, driven by their passion for music that’s been fostered from a young age.
“I would listen to like different sets and like, you know, Shazam songs off of that. Listen to people’s EDC sets and be Shazamming stuff or I’d look up like the words from it and the artists and try and dig and find whatever songs they were playing in their shows,” Robby said of discovering music in the last ’00s.
Their latest EP Euphoria is inspired by that formative era of 2009 – 2012, and sees Louis The Child experiment with more complex darker production than we’ve seen in the past.
The collection features Bea Miller, A R I Z O N A, Livingston, NEZ, Theophilus London and one of their heavy influences Skrillex – another full-circle moment for Robby and Freddy.
We caught up to chat about the EP’s creation, the unlikely coming together of their track “Waiting To Feel Like This”, and find out which is the definitive best deep dish pizza joint in Chicago. Watch the full chat BELOW:
