Interview: Jaydon Colvin of Outloved talks new single, video and tour

Melbourne alt-rock quartet Outloved are the underdogs of the local punk scene and ready for their big break. Their latest offering “Never Enough” is the band’s second single of the year, following previous banger “Still Lonely” and 2021’s only release “It’s All Hate”.

We caught up with frontman Jaydon Colvin to discuss the single and what comes next.

“We’re definitely trying to bring it back now. We were with a label that I won’t name and we got out of our contract because it just wasn’t working. The day that I sent them the cash to get out of it was the day that I uploaded the new song. Pretty stoked with the response so far.”

“Never Enough” is without a doubt the band’s catchiest anthem to date. From the searing riffs to the strained vocals in the powerful chorus, the track is sure to go down as well live as through headphones on a shitty day.

“We went to write it with Ionei Heckenberg from Ocean Sleeper and Luke, our drummer, was like, ‘I want a song where I’m just in the pocket’. Luke did that beat and I did the little guitar bit and the song just built around that. I don’t think that my skills and my vocal ability is good enough. Once we played it together, I was like, ‘this is sick, I can do it’. It was sort of relieving – it’s a good fight back of that imposter syndrome.”

The accompanying video shows Jaydon running from masked assailants in an old ute before pursuing him on foot. It switches between slo-mo, real time and sped-up sequences in a single shot as he runs away, including a hilarious knockout with an Esky.

“It was so much fun. I was in bed for the next two days and had to call off work because I was in so much pain. We drove down to our guitarist Lane’s place in Stratford (regional Victoria) and he had this huge Ford truck, so we were like, ‘let’s put that in the clip somehow’. We got Shaun Williams, who shoots a lot of sports, and it was really good having him. He sat in the back of a car with it going like 20km an hour, then he had to slide out of the car and run sideways, then go through the gate backwards.”

Their latest offering comes just two months on from their previous single “Still Lonely”, another banger with a bit more bite and a video that ties in with the balaclava-donning hitmen. We asked Jaydon if the two tracks will be appearing on a project together in the future and it seems that fans are in luck.

“I can definitely say that we’re releasing a group of singles that will form an EP. We’ve got one more dropping at the end of this year then two more at the start of next year. The title track is probably my favourite song that we’ve ever done.”

Outloved also played their debut headline show at Cherry Bar in Melbourne last August, supported by Clay J Gladstone and Loose End.

“It was sick. For some reason, all four of us were not in the right mindset before we played and I don’t think we played as well as we probably should have. But I guess that goes back to the whole self-doubt thing. It was still a sick show and the people that came made it the most special show. It was just a party and Clay J are the most insane live band I’ve ever seen.”

The band will be taking their fresh set on the road for the AM//PM Emo Night tour with Pridelands this November.

“I’ve been nagging AM//PM to get on a tour for years. I do a lot of video/photo stuff and Ocean Sleeper take me around, so I got introduced to AM//PM through them. To tour with Pridelands will be sick too, they’re hectic.”

With a bunch of shows in the works and new music on the way, it begs the question of whether a headline tour is on the books for the new year.

“We talked about it just a couple of days ago. I think we’re definitely going to plan on doing our own headline tour. Being in a band is definitely a money-pit, but a good one. The things we do for music, it’s all worth it.”

As a product of their influence, we asked Jaydon what’s on high rotation in his playlist at the moment.

“I’m really digging Millsy’s (JSTNXMLLR) new music. He’s really nailing that whole new wave of pop punk. Stevie Knight, his producer, rips as well so he’s in the right hands. I listen to this guy Aries a lot and a bit of KennyHoopla. Estella//, that song slaps.”

Outloved have been ones to watch since their debut EP Be There for Me in 2020, which reached #7 on the Australian Independent Records (AIR) charts.
