Interview: Dylan Menzie (Canada) discusses Adolescent Nature while Down Under in Sydney

With his new album Adolescent Nature, Canadian troubadour Dylan Menzie has put his heart on his sleeve yet again. In Australia for Australian Music Week and also the Canada Down Under showcase in Sydney, the songwriter takes us through his new music, the reaction to it and where he’s going from here.

“It’s a strange feeling, to hear yourself,” he remarks, with single “Kenya” enjoying great radio play in Canada “I usually shut it off. …I think when you’re in the studio and you’re constantly running the song over and over again, listening to it more than any one person should ever listen to a song; by the time it’s on the radio, you’ve heard it countless times!”

“When I released my first record, I was 18 and had just come out of high school.” he remembers, talking about his creative process. “I had no idea of anything about the music industry, how to really record an album, anything. Just having that experience in the studio informs what you do in the studio. It changed a lot from record to record; moving to a new producer also changes things a lot. It wanted to experience something a little more regional instead of it being so localised; I contacted somebody who I respected and went over to Halifax in Nova Scotia to record the next one.”

“I’m really proud of it, but I don’t think I achieved everything that I would want to achieve; that’s why I’m working on another one! I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen. I hope it does, because I drive myself crazy recording and writing, but I don’t know if it ever will.”
