Grouplove perform their first show in over two years at SXSW on Saturday night!

While the official music program of this year’s SXSW event is yet to kick off (it’s time is coming on Monday…), a run of unofficial label and company parties have filled up Austin’s downtown district as part of SXSW Interactive. One such party saw Grouplove return to the stage for their first live show in a little over two years, the Californians headlining Tumblr’s free show at Mohawk.

The line up also featured live performances and DJ sets by the likes of BAIO and Wild Belle, while SXSW buzz artist Kelela took to the outdoor stage just after 11pm. Performing tunes that rolled off the tongue and out through the PA system immaculately, the Washington-bred vocalist lapped up the praise, praise which has grown significantly since her last showcases in Austin.

Grouplove took the stage a little after midnight to rapturous applause, performing a lengthy set full of material from their acclaimed records Never Trust a Happy SongSpreading Rumours and their self-titled debut EP, not to mention giving fans a taste of their new music in a performance of ‘deep cut’ “Traumatized”.

New parents Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi looked as in sync with each other as ever, delivering lyrics loud and strong, thrashing back and forth during the night from the lighter “Lovely Cup” to the band’s chaotic cover of “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys. A welcome return for the band who’ve been away and no doubt, an indication of what surprises music fans can expect from SXSW yet.
