We are blessed in Australia with a plethora of talented female singer/songwriters. A newcomer to the list, with a bullet to her name, is Townsville-raised, now Melbourne-resident Matilda Duncan. Recently, Matilda released the emotional and poignant piano ballad, “Grocery Store”, and we are stoked to be premiering its video today.
About the track, Matilda writes: “…it is a testament to the other side of heartbreak. The song is near to me not just because of the way it helped me move forward, but now I hope it might give someone else a place to hold all the same feelings I experienced”.
Matilda artfully puts these difficult emotions into words. She paints a vivid picture of heartbreak and loss. I’m sure we can all understand where she is coming from here – “if you see me at the grocery store, do me a favour, spare me the small talk.” The visuals on a beautiful remote beach fit in perfectly – where better to work through your feelings? The video was filmed and edited by Kim Quint. The track was produced by Cameron Nacson and mastered by Klaus Hill.
Matilda is very much an artist on the rise. Her lyrics are sharp and visual, and connect in the way that her influences, such as Missy Higgins, Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine, and Gretta Ray, do so effectively. She hit the festival trail early on, having scored the support slot for The Reubens through a Triple J competition, and went on to play at Groovin’ the Moo. The future is bright for Matilda, and hopefully, more music is to come before not too long.
