Exclusive Video Premiere: Call the Mourning “Break” (2025)

Brisbane/Meanjin’s Call the Mourning recently dropped single “Break“, an angsty musing on obsession and the last release ahead of their upcoming EP. Today we’re excited to be premiering the accompanying music video exclusively here on The AU Review.

Call the Mourning consists of Constance Grafos (vocals/guitar), Dominic Willimott (drums), and new addition Kai Giovanni (bass), with the band teaming with guitarist Dylan Neal for live shows. The Call the Mourning sound is a blend of alt influences, from nu-metal to emo to shoegaze, with the mix of vicious growls and Grafos’ plaintive vocals adding an edge of female rage.

They recently opened for Sydney punks FANGZ at their Brisbane show, and also dropped “Villain-Victim“, a long-distance collab with Atlanta’s Drawing on Scars.

Of “Break”, frontwoman Grafos said:

“”Break” is pretty much written from the point of view of my sleep paralysis demon. It explores a bit of obsession, a bit of dark feminine energy and also the classic “knowing someone isn’t good for you” but trying to make it work. Embrace those demons!”

“The hook of the song is “pain makes it pure” which is a line from a book I read a few years ago that really resonated with me.”

The video comes to us from Vagabond Visions, and was filmed at dive bar and music venue Greaser. Grafos says:

“We really wanted a set that was going to match the aesthetic of the song so Greaser was perfect for it.”
