Americana and alt-country musician Rosy Nolan is pulling at the heartstrings in her vibrant new single, “How It Feels To Fall In Love”. Rosy captures that moment when lightning strikes in that thing called love, and we are so excited to be premiering it ahead of the release on Thursday.
In a time when it’s easy to get bogged down by division and conflict that seems to be wherever one looks, this song is an absolute tonic. There’s a lightness and optimism that springs eternal, as Rosy rejoices in the joy of love. The track was co-written with Ted Russell Kamp.
“How It Feels To Fall In Love” was inspired by the Queen of the Night, a rare cactus flower that blooms just once a year, and only at night. This delightful country rumba captures this fleeting moment. “They’re gigantic one day, and gone the next,” Nolan explains. “I kept thinking about how fragile and special it is to have that kind of opening… how falling in love is this delicate, fleeting thing that only happens under the right conditions.”
Rosy’s old-time country vocals glisten and enchant in this lyrically uplifting story, which is rich and descriptive – “Your raging fire will keep me warm / Call it magic, call it chemistry / You’re the only one that’s meant for me”. The fiddle and accordion, along with a swinging Latin percussion, give it a rhythmic feeling that oozes rumba cha cha cha.
About the collaboration with Ted Russell Kamp, Rosy told the AU:
“Ted had asked me if I wanted to do a co-write. I was always terrified of writing with someone else…I’m so darn particular. I showed up with just an inkling of the song, maybe a verse or something, and once we started playing, the rest just spilled out. Ted’s such a talented and easygoing guy that any nerves I had melted away.
I’m not even sure when the calypso feel crept in…it didn’t start out that way. But every time we played it live, we’d swing it just a little harder. The ‘cha cha cha’ at the end sealed the deal.”
There are some stellar musicians involved on the track. Rosy played the acoustic guitar, and Julian McClanahan features on fiddle and backing vocals, Billy Lupton on mandolin and backing vocals, Dirk Powell on accordion, Ryan Posner on double bass, and Kevin Brown on percussion.
“How It Feels to Fall In Love” will be on Rosy’s forthcoming album, Main Attraction, which will be released on the 17th of October. It is steeped in Americana roots, with Western swing, honky tonk, and old-time country, paying homage to the outstanding American records of the 1920s–1940s.
