Exclusive Single Premiere: King Ibis “Cooling Embers” (2024)

King Ibis

Have you ever lost the spark? Maybe the intensity of a relationship has started to fade. The job which you were so passionate about no longer shines as brightly. Or making your way as a musician is just proving too hard. Boorloo/Perth-based indie-rock band King Ibis have just the cathartic banger that encapsulates this so adroitly. We’re thrilled today to be premiering “Cooling Embers”, the latest single from the group ahead of its release on Friday.

It effortlessly oscillates between the highs of the early fun times, and the lows when the joy has been chipped away. The vocals of lead singer Nadene Burchell beautifully track the sliding bittersweet emotions. The guitars are playful, moody and swinging, and the bass and synths add to this vibrant and rich melancholic gem. The outro may leave us with the refrain of “Nothing good ever lasts forever”, but the journey was full of joy.

About the track, front woman Nadene explains: “‘Cooling Embers’ began as a comment on the challenges of a long-term relationship losing its passion and spark, but the meaning changed for me after a conversation with our guitarist, Matt. He asked me if the song was about feeling disillusioned with pursuing a career as an artist. Since then, I have looked at it with fresh eyes and really resonate with the new meaning. ‘Cooling Embers’ represents for me the moments of uncertainty but also the drive to continue finding the things that make me feel inspired and connected to the people I get the opportunity to share the experience with.”

The track was produced and mixed by Dave Parkin at Blackbird Studios (Spacey Jane, Sly Withers, Old Mervs).

The band has reached some lofty heights in recent times. They scored the support slot for Coldplay at Optus Stadium last year. They have also shared stages with the likes of Thelma Plum,  Tash Sultana, Spacey Jane, Jebediah, Dulcie, Sly Withers and Dear Sunday.

You’ll be able to catch them play “Cooling Embers” live on their  national tour which kicks off on the 14th March in Meanjin/Brisbane, before finishing up in Walyalup/Fremantle on the 20th April. Full dates below.

As an added bonus, we also have an exclusive preview of the accompanying video. It was co-directed by Sarah Haleem and Samantha Goddard. It astuteley captures the joys of the carefree good times, and also when life in general can be overwhelming.

Enjoy the fabulous “Cooling Embers” from King Ibis!
