Exclusive Single Premiere: Katy Denney “Bad At This” (2026)

Katy Denney

We are very excited to be premiering “Bad At This”, the new single from Sydney-based singer-songwriter Katy Denney, ahead of its official release this Friday.

The first taste of Denney’s forthcoming EP (due later this year), “Bad At This” is an intimate and quietly powerful indie-folk offering that leans into vulnerability, emotional precision and the uneasy beauty of being truly seen. Stretching out to nearly five minutes, the track is beautifully paced — never rushed, never indulgent — allowing its emotional weight to unfold with patience and grace.

Carried by Denney’s expressive vocal delivery and innate gift for storytelling, the song reveals itself slowly, drawing natural parallels to the work of Joni Mitchell. Like Mitchell at her most affecting, Denney finds depth in the detail, transforming moments of internal conflict into something quietly expansive and universally felt.

Speaking about the track, Denney shared with the AU: “’Bad At This’ is a song that I’m really proud of. It was written during a time I was realising how disarming being seen can feel. How, if this catches you off guard it can really throw you for a loop (in the worst way) but also be so incredibly comfortable and comforting. I’ve found that small familiarities feel like the biggest things to notice about someone, and if they notice right back – also big. ‘Bad At This’ is about when this contentment and unpreparedness meet, and how it brings up both confidence and a whole lot of insecurities. The overthinking can be a bit much sometimes and that’s where ‘Bad At This’ was born.”

It’s that emotional tension — between comfort and insecurity, confidence and self-doubt — that gives “Bad At This” its quiet power. Lovely acoustic guitars round out this high-class offering. We can’t wait to hear more.

“Bad At This” is officially released this Friday. You can hear it first below via our exclusive premiere.
