Western Australia continues to throw up talented music acts. Today we premiere “Suffering”, the debut track for Dunsborough outfit Dallas Radio. If this track is any indication, we can expect big choruses, catchy melodies and 90s inspired guitar riffs from the band.
The band was born from the elements of two earlier WA bands, Dallas Royal and Desert Radio. They’ve been plying their trade playing festivals not only in WA, but also on the Eastern seaboard over the last couple of years, and have finally headed into the recording studio.
The band is comprised of Mitch Baker on lead vocals, Brad Sims and Jason Mack on guitar, Justin Mason on bass and Evan Smith on drums.
Listening to the song, there is more than a passing nod to the Smashing Pumpkins. Bakers massive vocals envelop you, whilst the guitars rip, and the backing vocals carry it home. “Suffering” is a muscular track that resonates so well because of its empathy. This is a song for a sunset slot at a packed outdoor festival.
Mitch Baker says of the track: “‘Suffering’ is about uncertainty, fear of change and losing a life you once had. Like everyone else last year, we found ourselves thrust into this crazy, almost apocalyptic, new way of life. One silver lining from the pandemic is all the new material written throughout the whole saga and this is our take.
It all started with the main guitar riff at rehearsals one day. I latched onto it and started throwing some lyrics down. I was thinking about how much change was happening every day on so many levels and how much it must be impacting family life, relationships and the life we once knew.
So I guess the story is mimicking the pandemic story and how it’s changed so many lives for better or worse. The feel of the tune is about pushing through and hanging in there together no matter what life throws at you. In the end if you have each other that’s what’s important.”
The track was recorded and co-produced with Wade Reynolds, from Submersed Recording Studio in Dunsborough. It was mixed at Foxhole Studios by Chad Blondel (Great Gable, Karnivool) and mastered at Studios301 by Steve Smart.
To celebrate the release of the track, the band has some gigs organised. See below for details.
