Byron Bay’s multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ally Palmer has been teasing out singles since last year, and we are beyond excited to be premiering Need You Around, her debut album from the talented artist.
With a tip of the hat to ’60s surf pop, ingrained with solid folk roots and a love for old soul music, the songs on the album are polished and imbued with an earthiness that effortlessly tug at the heartstrings.
The final single to be released in conjunction with the album is the title track, “Need You Around”, a jaunty upbeat tune that dives headlong into the intertwined themes of love and loneliness. The song was the first one written for the album and was engineered and mixed by Paul Pilsneniks.
About “Need You Around”, Ally writes: “The song “Need You Around” happened unexpectedly. I love playing more groove-based songs on the piano and I just started playing the main groove to Need You Around one day, not expecting it to turn into anything. After a few months, I noticed I couldn’t sit down at the piano without playing this groove. I loved the piano part I’d come up with so much, I realized I had to take it somewhere and turn it into a complete song.”
The tracks on the album are a sweet mix of optimism and lessons learnt. The influences on this album are wide and varied. From funk, moody blues, indie folk to lilting surf-rock, there is a clarity and maturity that dazzles for a debut album. Let Ally Palmer be your discovery of 2022.
To celebrate the release of the album, Ally has some shows around the northern rivers of NSW later in the year. See dates below.
