Eden Mulholland (New Zealand) on new record Hunted Haunted, working with a producer, and touring

New Zealand musician Eden Mulholland dropped by the AU office for a chat about his new record Hunted Haunted, working with a producer and his upcoming tour… On Hunted Haunted, he said “the record is doing quite well really… we’ve known the songs for a while and have road tested the songs for about 6 months… It seems to work.”

Having recently worked with a new producer on the record, he said about his experiences: “I went to NY, and got a producer who I met at CMJ… I was looking for someone to do some collaboration with and he seemed like a really cool dude… We sat down in NY for a couple of weeks and did pre-production. He pushed me towards a really strong rhythm section that was kind of group based… Initially I was like this is doing my head in, but after that I realised what he was doing was drawing out the song quite well…”

Continuing to speak of their working relationship, he stated: “After much teething… It seemed to happen really naturally and he had some really cool ideas. If you can make something stronger by sharing the load, it’s a good thing. And that was a good lesson for me to learn.”

And as for the inspiration behind the lyrics and album title? Eden said the following: “I tend to do things at the last minute with lyrics… I do like how words fit together in odd ways, I try to be once removed from being literal… The title I just had my default thing, where a song from the album should be the title… But as time wore on I like how Haunted and Hunted had ballpark themes of the record…”
