75 acts were already announced to play the mammoth new music event BIGSOUND in Brisbane this September – and today we have another 64 to add to the bill; plus the festival is giving us its first glimpse into what we can expect from the events, parties and venues that will run across the event’s four days.
Taking place from September 4-7 in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley Live Music Precinct, the names are as diverse as they are exciting; a strong mix of known and unknown acts who are heading to Brisbane to assume the title of “next big thing”. Of the acts we at the AU are already familiar with, we are particularly excited to see former Tigertown frontwoman Charlie Collins added to the festival (who just landed the Gang of Youths support slot), rising superstar Didirri – who just dropped his brilliant debut EP Measurements, HANDSOME – the stunning new project from the artist formerly known as Caitlin Park, one of Australia’s most powerful voices thando, Gold Coast indie folk duo Hollow Coves who just sold out shows all over the UK and Europe, No Mono featuring Big Scary and #1 Dads’ Tom Iansek, Hobart’s acclaimed EWAH & The Vision of Paradise and Singapore singer/songwriter Linying. The full list of acts added is at the end of this article.
The $100,000 Levi’s Music Prize is also back, set to provide $25,000 each to four showcasing artists, plus $5,000 to each winning artist from Stage & Screen to get them on their way in 2018. In 2017, the program helped Stella Donnelly, Alex Lahey, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Hatchie get overseas to fly the flag for Australian music.
As for the parties, expect over twenty events hosted by the likes of Levi’s, Virgin Australia, The Guardian, Fat Wreck Chords, Milk! Records, Secret Sounds / The Music, Future Super Services, Beehive & 123 Agency, GYROstream, Stage & Screen, Love Busk, Bettercups, Queensland Music Awards, BEMAC as well as showcase parties from around the region including the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Adelaide, Singapore and Korea. Yes that’s right – Singapore and Korea!
And look out for unofficial events, too – including your truly, who’ll be celebrating their 10th birthday with a soon-to-be-announced event on the Friday night.
And while we’re turning 10, 2018 will sees BIGSOUND play host for Oztix’s 15th birthday celebrations, the annual Women in Music gathering and the ever-popular Home First Nations Showcase, which this year will be expanded as BIGSOUND’s opening party at midday on Tuesday, welcoming the world to Brisbane.
Friday night’s closing party will book-end the event, hosted by Fat Wreck Chords and Milk! Records, providing an eclectic lineup to farewell the four days of festivities in style. Parties (excluding the closing night party which is open to all ticket holders, and unofficial events which don’t come under the ticketing system – naturally) are only accessible with a BIGSOUND purple pass which gives priority line access to all BIGSOUND Festival venues as well as exclusive access to all parties, conference events, panels, workshops and secret shows.
This year’s BIGSOUND Festival venues have also been announced with 256 Wickham, Alehouse Stage & Mane Stage at Woolly Mammoth, Black Bear Lodge, Crowbar Black, Crowbar Brisbane, Empire Hotel, Family, Heya Bar, Laruche, Press Club, Ric’s Big Backyard, The Brightside, The Elephant Hotel, The Flying Cock, The Foundry, The Valley Drive-In, The Zoo and triple j Unearthed Stage @ Famous all showcasing across four nights, within three blocks.
