Aussies at SXSW: Spotlight on 2016 Showcase Artist Lo Carmen!

She may be based in the US now, but Australian musician Lo Carmen definitely hasn’t lost any of her Australian music charm in her time away. Since her debut album release in 2002, the artist has been performing and producing music representative of not only an eclectic music taste, but a talented level of musicianship too. This March, Lo will be showcasing at SXSW and today, she becomes the latest Aussie to feature in our spotlight series!

Have you played SXSW before? If so, how many times?

Yes, in 2009. I attempted to keep a diary for JMag – you can read all about it here.

What are you hoping will come out of this year’s event for you?

I would love to break into the world of songwriting opportunities and stumble across some like-minded peeps over here in the US, where I’m now living, to collaborate with in obvious ways.

What is a track that you think best represents where you are right now and what audiences can expect from your sound and set?

I’d love to have my band with me but I’m going it alone, so this version of “The Bee” is probably the closest example of what I’ll be sounding like there. Singing this song always puts me in a nice little trance.

What made you want to showcase at SXSW?

I love the idea that it’s this strange candy land of opportunity, where you could meet anyone and many might or might not happen. I will go with a few aims and no expectations.

Do you have any dream collaborations?

I have alway shad a fantasy of writing a song with Dolly Parton in a field at 5am. I read once that that is her favourite time and place to write. I would also love to write songs for soul artists Sharon Jones or Charles Bradley.

How much more US touring is on the cards for this year?

I’m mainly songwriting and recording this year with the occasional special show. I’m looking forward to getting out of the house and playing SXSW and Canadian Music Week!

How do you think/hope the American crowd will receive your music?

I’ve always got on very well with Americans and I expect we will continue to enjoy each other’s company!

What other Aussie act playing SXSW would you recommend the rest of the world needs to see?

Julia Jacklin has caught my ear, she writes lovely songs and I like her style.

Please list your SXSW showcases (to now) and give us a link where we can find your most up to date list!

Here’s my latest music video for the title track from my new album Everyone You Ever Knew (Is Coming Back to Haunt You). We recorded it in Sydney and shot the video in Georgia on a lake and I think it sums me up pretty well.
