16 minutes of gorgeous Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay just dropped

Rift Apart

The latest PlayStation State of Play broadcast spotlit Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the PS5’s first truly huge exclusive. The 16-minute gameplay trailer gives a clear idea of what Insomniac’s vision for the game is, who Rivet the mysterious female Lombax is, and how the game uses the PS5’s hardware to best effect.

Spectacle seems to be the order of the day, because Rift Apart will be the first true showcase of the PS5’s hardware. From its work on Spider-Man and Miles Morales, Insomniac have clearly gained a greater degree of experience with setpiece moments and effects-driven spectacle.

Honestly, it’s a lot to take in. Rift Apart‘s visuals are packed with next-gen lighting and detail. Every enemy Ratchet strikes with his wrench bursts into a spray of nuts and bolts, and the rift-jumping tech that is the game’s core mechanic still looks as impressive as ever.

Though the trailer does spend a little time on Rivet, the game’s second major playable character, it’s still not completely clear how differently she will play to Ratchet.

We look forward to finding out when Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart launches June 11, 2021, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Preorders are live now at JB Hi-FI and EB Games.
