Rockstar Games confirms next Grand Theft Auto game is in active development

With developer Rockstar Games’ historic run of both support and popularity for Grand Theft Auto V, many many have given up on expectations of a new iteration in the works. But the day has come. Rockstar Games has officially announced it is indeed working on the next game in the series, confirming the game is in active development.

What this means moving forward is anybody’s guess as Rockstar Games has not announced an official title, release date, or setting. Could this be the highly coveted Grand Theft Auto VI? Or will Rockstar take a slight detour and create an iteration based on a particular city with the likes of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas releasing before the outright numbered sequel.

This news could have also come in the wake of Rockstar’s abysmal critical reception, after the release of Grand Theft Auto: the Trilogy: Definitive Edition. While developer Grove Street Games had taken over the workload, these are still in many respects Rockstar Games’ creations.

Personally, we would like to see the next Grand Theft Auto try its hand at the live service formula, with an ever-evolving map, further bridging the gap between offline and online play. What we get and when we get it though, remains to be seen. It’s pretty safe to call us excited.
