Gamescom 2017: Overwatch‘s latest map Junkertown finally brings the game to Straya

Blizzard’s Gamescom 2017 briefing was full of details for upcoming content, but among the most entertaining announcements was that the developer’s popular team shooter Overwatch would finally be getting a fully-fledged, Australian-themed map.

An Escort (or deliver-the-payload) type map, Junkertown is “located in the harsh and unforgiving Australian Outback,” reads the trailer description. “Constructed from the remains of a destroyed omnium, it’s now the home to a band of lawless scavengers known as the Junkers, led by their cutthroat Queen.”

Junkertown marks the second time that an Australian setting has been featured in the game. The first time was the Sydney Lucioball stadium that is part of the current Summer Games event and, let’s be honest, that barely counts.

Blizzard released two trailers for the new map — one centred around showcasing the map itself, the other a quick short about Junkertown’s pre-eminent criminal masterminds, Roadhog and Junkrat. We’ve embedded both in this piece for your viewing pleasure.

While no date for Junkertown’s release has been set, some Gamescom attendees will be able to get hands on with the map on the show floor over the next few days.

In more good news, fans should also keep an eye out for a brand new Overwatch animated short on Thursday morning AEST.
