Games Review: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition (Switch, 2017) is still great but hardly definitive

Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, now the eighth system the game has been ported to, may still be a great game and one of the best platformers since the original Rayman titles and those other Nintendo titles with the ex-plumber, but it’s far from the Definitive version.

The musical mash-up stages at the end of each world are by far the most fun and stand-out levels in the game and the inclusion (as with all the other versions of the game) of some of the best Rayman Origins levels as unlockables keeps you coming back for more.

The funky, vibrant mixture of colours that cross in and out of its 3D visuals and 2D gameplay make Rayman Legends a joy to behold on any platform in my opinion, but sadly the Nintendo Switch, even with its impressive hardware can’t quite match up to that of its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts. Noticeable slow-down and longer load times than before dog what is an otherwise stellar experience.

Another area where it feels like Ubisoft missed an opportunity is in shipping yet another version of Rayman Legends that doesn’t feature the awesome co-op play the Wii U version did so well. It still works, but nothing beats the experience of truly being able to help a friend by controlling Murfy on a separate pad or controller.

To be clear, Rayman Legends is still a fantastic game, especially if you somehow managed to miss at least one of its 8 other manifestations in the past. However, in order for this to be considered Definitive version of Rayman Legends, it would need a lot more work.

Score: 7.0 out of 10
Highlights: Smooth controls; addictive, challenging level design, Music Levels are a treat!
Lowlights: Some slowdown and frame drops; load times; those pesky collectable Lums
