E3 2016: Crash Bandicoot returns, but probably not in the way you were hoping for

90’s gaming mascot Crash Bandicoot will return to Sony PlayStation platforms this year as part of Skylanders Imaginators. He will then be back in 2017 in an HD remaster of the first three games in the Crash series.

Crash made his self-titled debut back in 1996 in the PSOne. He quickly became regarded as the system’s mascot. Originally created by Naughty Dog, a developer that is better known these days for games like Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us, Crash went multiplatform and appeared in many other games created by different developers.

Platform exclusive characters aren’t uncommon in Skylanders either — last year saw Nintendo team up with developer Vicarious Visions to bring Donkey Kong and Bowser into the Wii U version of Skylanders SuperChargers via amiibo.

Skylanders Imaginators is due to release October 16 on PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360 and PS3. The untitled Crash Bandicoot HD remaster has no confirmed release date this time.

It’s nice to see the old boy back, but after Ratchet & Clank‘s stellar return to form this year, we doubt this is what fans were hoping for.
