Sydney Writers’ Festival returns to Carriageworks for four events this Summer as part of Sydney Festival

Sydney Writers' Festival

Sydney Writers’ Festival and Sydney Festival are joining forces for one weekend in January to present four major events at Carriageworks.

The four events, presented under the banner Something to Talk About will see Sydney audiences spending time with the 2020 Booker Prize Winner, Douglas Stuart; perennial Festival favourites Jennifer Byrne, Michael Mohammed Ahmad and Benjamin Law; plus a host of Indigenous storytelling talent, including Briggs and Archie Roach.

Here’s the details of the four events:

Saturday January 16th

Douglas Stuart: Shuggie Bain

Carriageworks | 11am | $25

Booker Prize winning author Douglas Stuart beams in live from New York for an in-conversation event about his award-winning debut masterpiece Shuggie Bain.

Recommended Reading

Carriageworks | 2pm | $25

The event brings together Festival favourites Jennifer Byrne, Michael Mohammed Ahmad and Benjamin Law, along with Artistic Director Michael Williams. Each presenter has to choose one beloved classic, one obscure international gem, and one Australian release in danger of being overlooked to champion.

Sunday January 17th

Our Home, Our Heartbeat

Carriageworks | 11am | $15

Join rapper, actor, children’s writer and all round renaissance man Briggs as he talks about, and reads from, his bestselling children’s book Our Home, Our Heartbeat. Briggs will be joined by Archie Roach and a host of yet-to-be-announced Indigenous storytellers for this family orientated event.

An Educated Guess: Predictions, Prescriptions and Wild Hopes For The Year Ahead

Carriageworks | 2pm | $25

Some of Australia’s smartest, most thoughtful, and most imaginative writers turn their attention and their thoughts to the year ahead. Radio National’s Health Report and Coronacast host Norman Swan is joined by acclaimed Indigenous author Gayle Kennedy, award winning journalist Kate McClymont, the award-winning author Maxine Beneba Clarke and a panel of special guests to discuss what’s in store for 2021
