Adelaide Fringe Review: The Fairbairns – Fair Dinkum brings their online banter to life

The Fairbairn brothers, Lachlan and Jaxon have developed a good social media following from their interactive banter. Their show Fair Dinkum brings the social media to a live stage with a form of improv sketch comedy.

Their sold out show at the Factory in the Garden of Unearthly Delights caused some logistical issues, with extra seats needing to be found to fit the swelling crowd. Once everyone was settled, the boys hit the stage, engaging in some small talk with the audience. No real props are used, a large screen behind two chairs making up the complete accessories.

The first sketch is set in an airplane cockpit, with the premise of Jaxon as a drunk pilot. Technical issues with the laptop meant that several cues were missed or played out of order, but the pair took it in their stride and carried on. As their act is a form of improv comedy, it didn’t really matter.

The premise of each sketch varied between a blacksmith shop from the middle ages, to a Russian farm where a young soccer player was being poached, to a doctor’s office. The sketches played out in a similar style to the on-line sketches, with a little less polish and more shambolic. Some jokes elicited laughter while others fell a little flat. It was perhaps a case of first night nerves getting in the way.

In general, they presented a show that had no surprises as far as the format goes. Two brothers riffing with each other about silly things. If you enjoy their on-line comedy you’ll find their live show a good complement.
