For the final time this month we’ve updated our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with some of the best new music from across Australia and the world. We’ve got ten new tracks for you, two of which we premiered earlier in the week. Sydney-based singer-songwriter, producer, and long time AU favourite Daphnie takes out our Track of the Week with “Lights Out Baby”, the focus track from his freshly released sophomore ‘mixtape’ The Reckless Act of Growing Up.
“Lights Out Baby” has all the hallmarks of a Daphnie classic – there’s the ever present rumbling undercurrent of chaos energy, bundles of charm, and then just the sharp, well crafted songwriting. In whatever genre he’s chosen to dabble in this week, Daphnie always manages to capture and hold your attention, and “Lights Out Baby”, with it’s nod to 90s romcom soundtracks is no different.
The Reckless Act of Growing Up, which dropped earlier this week, was created entirely in Daphnie’s bedroom. Inspired by moving further in adulthood, Daphnie describes the mixtape as, “the friction of existing as a loud, messy, maximalist, in a quiet, minimalistic world… only ever want to write about my own lived experiences, and all these songs cover every single thing I’ve cared about over the last few years.”
Also added to the playlist this week is “mrs brightside” the latest single from Melbourne trio Blusher. Confessional, gossipy, and bristling with restless energy, “mrs brightside” is all about wanting somebody you absolutely cannot have, in all the messy detail. It’s a lot of fun, with some lovely slick production and a chorus that’s just begging for the call and response treatment. You can expect to hear this one live across the next couple of weeks with the trio supporting Swedish icon Robyn on her imminent arena tour. For more information head HERE.
Sydney-based singer MEGZ has summer sorted with her new single “On My Body”, a playful dance-pop track with a hook that sticks and a chorus built for the dancefloor. It’s all about letting go and getting lost in the moment. Originally from the UK and now based in Sydney, MEGZ made the track entirely on her own, with no label or management behind her. She’s been road-testing it on boat parties around Sydney Harbour, where crowds were already dancing and singing along well before today’s release.
We first caught Newcastle four-piece Rum Jungle at The Great Escape in Brighton back in 2024, and they absolutely blew us away. They’ve continued to evolve since then, and their new single, “The Elephants Head”, finds them pushing their sound in exciting new directions. It’s lush and multi-layered, with driving guitars, punchy drums and synths adding to the mix.
Melbourne’s Lucky is having a huge year, and new single “Curtains” keeps the run going. Fuzzy guitars and hazy melodies give it a proper early-2000s indie feel, but beneath the bounce she’s grappling with how much society shapes the way we think, and finding something oddly comforting in the fact that we’re all caught up in it together. Lucky is currently supporting Freak Slug on their US tour. A massive 2027 beckons.
This week saw alt-country institution Lambchop announce Demoed, a new EP featuring an all star line-up of guest artists singing over demo versions of tracks from the band’s most recent album Punching the Clown. The first to be released is “Weakened” with the excellent MJ Lenderman taking on vocal duties. The idea behind the project, is not as a tribute, or a covers project, but as a way to focus on the songs instead of the frontman. And based on “Weakened” it works, with Lenderman bringing a fresh perspective to the album track.
“Wishing On Numbers” is the new single from Canberra shoegaze-emo hybrid Spouse, and the title track from their forthcoming debut album that arrives November 27th on Gutwrench Records. It’s atmospheric, introspective, with a wonderful moody intensity throughout, from the gritty guitars, to the striking violin, and Hunter’s captivating and powerful vocals – this one really takes you on a journey.
Then for something a little left field, we have “The Olde River Grande”, the new single from Melbourne group The Counterfeit – a 12-piece spaghetti western ensemble. The single is from the band’s forthcoming third album, Farewell Helldorado, which is being marketed as “a dangerous motion picture soundtrack to a Western that never existed”. Featuring vocals from Freya Josephine Hollick, the single really does deliver those classic Morricone vibes in spades, but with a twist. The album purposefully casts women in the leading roles of what is traditionally a male-dominated genre, and explores the spaghetti western with a more contemporary eye.
Finally, we’ve also added premieres from Yendys (“When I Find Out”) and Michael Ward (“Little Yellow Aeroplane”).
