Los Angeles-based performer Bryn Woznicki (aka Bryn Woz) brings her latest show SMUT to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
In the one-woman show, Bryn plays burlesque character Entendre Entendre, as she launches her memoir Smut. In the show, she her share stories from the novel, and her life of promiscuity and pansexuality.
As you can tell from the name alone, if you’re sex-positive, this show is for you. The character is fun, sexy and eccentric, and the show enjoyable from start to finish. There are hilarious moments, lessons to impart (just because you are well endowed doesn’t mean you know how to use it!), and introspective moments that lend an air of emptiness and heartbreak. What is the price you pay when sex becomes empty? This double Entendre wants to leave you with plenty to think about as you leave the Assembly Roxy late in the evening.
And – tell me you have ADHD without telling me you have ADHD – but you’ll find just about every form of performance in here.
Woz jumps effortlessly between poetry, burlesque, music, storytelling and audience participation. Consent is the only c-word that matters, she tells the crowd at the start of the show, so no one is going to be pressured to do anything they don’t want to do. And in doing so, she does create a calm sense amongst the crowd. She also encourages the snapping of fingers over clapping. But the moments where she put members of the crowd to work were amongst the most enjoyable moments. On our evening, the woman who was brought up to participate in a pre-written dialogue was a wonderful sport, leaving the whole audience in hysterics.
In spite of these moments, however, she didn’t have the most engaged crowd on the night I attended. Which can’t help but take away from the experience. I only saw it the once so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but you can tell that this show works best off an energetic crowd.
Such is the nature of relying on a diverse Edinburgh Fringe crowd – every show is going to be different. I don’t think it helped for some audience members that the show jumped over the place so much. And the transitions between different performance styles could use a bit of refining. But you couldn’t take your eyes off her for a moment. She’s created a character, and a show, that Fringe crowds do seem to be eating up. And rightly so.
I entered not knowing the artist, but left a fan. Bryn is a fearless talent you need to experience.
