It’s been over two years since they last played on home turf, but King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are finally headed back over our way. This December, the six-piece return for a long-awaited Australian tour, bringing a huge new record, a 29-piece orchestra, and the signature Gizz wall of sound.
The Phantom Island Tour marks the local live debut of their 27th album, out 13 June via p(doom) records, and sees them hit the east coast for six shows including Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. It’s shaping up to be something special.
In each city, two shows will take place. Firstly, an orchestral show in an iconic venue with a 29-piece ensemble (the Sydney Opera House with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane’s Princess Theatre with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl with Orchestra Victoria) led by musical director Chad Kelly.
Then the next night comes the full-blown, fuzz explosion that Australian audiences know and love. A melting pot of psych, metal, blues and whatever else they feel like throwing in. These are happening at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, Enmore Theatre in Sydney, and a final hometown takeover of Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. Party Dozen join in Brisbane and Sydney, while Barkaa supports the Melbourne show. Melbourne punters can also grab a discounted bundle ticket to catch both nights at the Bowl.
After years spent conquering stages across the world, without ever compromising their particular brand of chaos, it feels good to welcome King Gizz home. If you’ve seen them live, you already know. If you haven’t, now is the time.
