New Music Discoveries 9th May: Terra Rouge, Charlie Collins, St. South, and more

Terra Rouge

This week we have added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify, including two tracks we had premieres for earlier in the week. Our track of the week goes to Naarm’s Terra Rouge with her new track, “Kissing Girls”.

“Kissing Girls” is full-on catchy –  a singalong, dancealong, scream into the mirror banger, and we’re down for it. It takes a headlong look at the contradictions of queer denial and performative bisexuality. As Terra says, “this track pokes fun at the classic “I’m not gay, I just like kissing girls” trope, calling out the double standards queer women often face.”.  Play it, and play it again.

Charlie Collins continues to tease her forthcoming album Nightwriter this week, with the release of new single “Rock Bottom” and a one night only show at Sydney’s Paddington Uniting Church. “Rock Bottom” sees the Sydney-based singer-songwriter return to more familiar, rockier territory. Up-tempo and a bit of a belter, the track is also deeply personal, taking inspiration from a bender that turned into a major overdose. It’s a powerful track – authentic and bold in its candour and vulnerability – but also one that delivers musically. There are limited tickets remaining for tonight’s show – so be quick if you want to be among the first to hear the new album in full before the official August release date.

We are big fans of St. South at the AU. Beautiful, honest, and insightful songwriting is at the core of her music, and “getting bad again” is her first release of 2025. It’s a tender, gentle track with sweetly layered harmonies, highlighting the ache of a decline in mental health. She explains:  “Releasing this during Mental Health Awareness Month feels important – especially as a queer, gender-diverse artist, at a time when our community is being actively undermined by political decisions. This song is about recognising where you’re at, and still choosing to live.”

“Clover” is the new single from Melbourne-based artist Lucky, and sees her further cementing her signature sound – a fusion of hazy indie textures and the restless pulse of alt-rock. We love a bit of shimmering guitar here at the AU, and “Clover” delivers. Angsty, yet vulnerable, there’s also a slight nostalgic tinge to proceedings that’s really hits the spot (even if it does remind us the years are flying by). For those wanting to hear more, you can catch Lucky on the road with Dear Seattle until May 17th.

Last week, the Fremantle-based singer/songwriter Shannon Smith released his debut album, Out of the Shadows. His blend of folk, Americana, and soul is imbued with great honesty and beautiful guitar playing. “Till I’m Home” is from the album, and you can hear the rest of the album by heading over to his website, where you can grab yourself a vinyl, CD or purchase a download.

We’ve also added to the playlist this week is “Too Strung” the latest single from New Zealand indie-folk artist Solomon Crook. The single comes ahead of the release of his forthcoming EP, Under The Morning Tree, which is set for release on July 3rd. It’s a beautiful track, full of warmth, heart and soul. There’s something just inherently comforting about it all – from the guitar work through to the soulful understated vocals.

Other tracks added to the playlist this week include “Mountains Mountains Mountains” from Melbourne’s Emily Ulman and “The Void” from upcoming West Australian group Hazel.

Finally, we’ve added two premieres – “SFYL” by Alex Watts, and “Accountability” by This Space is Ours featuring Amariah.
