Ocean Colour Scene have been on a mammoth tour of the UK since late March. Supporting them has been Kula Shaker, and performed in Liverpool last night. The last time I saw both bands on the same bill was at Glastonbury in 1997. It was worth the wait!
It was a packed room at Mountford Hall in Liverpool University. They were still coming in when Kula Shaker hit the stage. Frontman Crispian Mills is as charismatic as ever, and their sweet blend of psych rock and post Brit-pop sounds hit the spot. They were the ‘special guests’ for the tour, and had the crowd singing along from the outset. Any other night of the week, they are a worthy headliner.
Ocean Colour Scene hit the stage at 9pm and we were quickly reminded how many great tunes they’ve released over the years. With five top-ten albums to their name, it was a case of hit after hit being rolled out. Appearing as a six-piece, the musicianship, songwriting and melodies came to the fore. Steve Craddock on lead guitar is still at the top of his game.
Special mention should be made to the visuals displayed during both acts.
Additional dates have been added to the tour – they continue on to Norwich, Bournemouth, London, Hull and Newcastle. Head to the official Ocean Colour Scene website for the dates and tickets.
It was a memorable night indeed. Bruce was there to bring you these images.
