The wait is over for tens of thousands of fans of WOMADelaide – Australia’s premier music festival – as organisers today announced another seven groups to complete an incredible line-up of over 550 artists from 34 countries for the March 2011 event.
WOMADelaide will for the second time only be staged as a four-day event in the stunning surrounds of Adelaide’s Botanic Park from Friday 11 March till Monday 14 March, transforming into a mecca of music, arts and dance.
Adding to the exceptional line-up of artists already announced for the iconic Australian event is one of the nation’s most celebrated indigenous artists, Archie Roach. Winner of the 2010 Deadly Award for Best Album for his release ‘1988’, Roach will present two special performances at WOMADelaide. One will be with his son Amos Roach and his nephew Ewen Baker – for the second show, the trio will be joined by Australian music legends Shane Howard and Neil Murray (appearing at the festival for the first time since 1997), performing a set of iconic indigenous songs.
WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said he was delighted and honored to welcome Archie Roach back to the event for
the fifth time since the festival began in 1992.
“Archie is an artist who not only embodies the spirit of the festival, he is one of the country’s greatest living musical
treasures – he is also part of WOMADelaide’s history,” he said.
Other new additions to the line-up are:
Legendary Brazilian Tropicalia band Os Mutantes, on their first ever Australian tour.
Energetic Canadian junk percussionists, ScrapArtsMusic, returning after five years.
Germany’s renowned and self proclaimed ‘Berlin style’ gypsy folk band 17 Hippies, the festival’s first-ever German artists.
The Ukraine’s extraordinary ‘ethno-chaos’ group DakhaBrakha, and the first Ukrainian group to appear at the festival in 14 years.
Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright.
Reunion Island’s Nathalie Natiembé, making a welcome return to Adelaide after wowing audiences at last year’s Alliance Française French Festival.
