Our 20 Favourite Records of 2015...So Far (Part Two: 10-1)

Yesterday, we brought you the first batch of 2015-released albums that AU contributors ranked as the best of the year so far. A great blend of Australian and international releases, the list reflected a wide range of music tastes and killer tunes that obviously have struck a chord with music fans globally. Today, we continue with the countdown, naming the ten records that have stood out above the rest as some of the best albums of 2015. Sure, we're only at the midway point of the year, but no doubt, some of these artists are probably going to be making a few end-of-year wrap ups too. So, from #10 through #1...

Vivid Live Review: Sufjan Stevens - Sydney Opera House (22.05.15)

Photo: Daniel Boud

It’s the hardest part of being an artist – letting go of your work – and Sufjan Stevens lets go all the way. In the first of his performances for Vivid 2015, he transformed the Concert Hall into a mesmerising montage of his life’s narrative. First thought when the lights came on is that it had to be this venue – such a large sound compared to the record and the seating meant that most of the crowd didn’t hold up their smartphones for the entire show.

10 Must See Shows of the VIVID Sydney Festival!

VIVID Sydney kicks off for another year this Friday and the line up is freakin' amazing, if we're honest. Such a melting pot of musicians, visual artists, performers and other creative brains in one of the most buzzing cities in Australia - it's going to be a great two weeks of shows for people to be checking out. Some of the artists we're excited to see do their thing are involved in all different aspects of the music industry; from the intrigue of goddess Grace Jones, to the heartbreaking lyrics of Sufjan Stevens - we're spoiled for choice!

Album Review: Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (2015 LP)

Much like a painting by Claude Monet, the true beauty of Sufjan Stevens’ last record The Age Of Adz is best realised by stepping back and watching the up close jumble take shape and make sense in its greater landscape. This approach is completely abandoned in Carrie & Lowell, an album that replaces the experimental electronics of its predecessor with complete unmasked vulnerability that demands you stay close and feel every emotionally charged moment.

Vivid Live 2015 delivers Morrissey, Sufjan Stevens, TV on the Radio, Future Classic, Daniel Johns, and more

It's that time of the year where we prepare for another edition of Vivid Sydney, that now world renowned festival of lights, music, and ideas that has become one of the most anticipated on our major events calender. With the 'light' side of the festival now set to expand to new precincts like Chatswood and Central Park, and 'ideas' delivering the likes of Mad Men TV series creator Matthew Weiner and a huge three-day gaming conference, 'music' seeks to yet again bring one of the festival's most diverse programs with it's Vivid LIVE line up. This year's curator, Sydney Opera House's Ben Marshall, has put together a strong program which includes multiple performances from Morrissey and Sufjan Stevens, as well as shows from TV on the Radio, Daniel Johns, Squarepusher, Hoodoo Gurus, The Drones, The Preatures, and Flume.

Single Stream: Sufjan Stevens "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" (2015)

Sufjan Stevens has given us the first taste of his new album Carrie & Lowell in the single, "No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross". From the information we'd been given about the record so far, we're to expect a return to Stevens' folk roots with this album, and this track has so far confirmed it. The guitar work is gorgeous and subtle in places, with Stevens' vocals yearning and brooding at the same time. Perhaps it's a safe way of introducing the highly-anticipated album to fans and newcomers alike, or perhaps its Stevens relishing his earlier influences and further developing sounds fans will associate with his earlier material. Either way, Carrie & Lowell remains a record we're so keen to hear, and this is a good one to get off the bench with.

Best of 2012 Countdown: Top 12 Music Videos.

Ahh, the good old music video. From pseudo porn to sickening displays of capitalism, right through to mind bogglingly creative translations of your favourite song, the music video is a well established arm of the music industry.

VIVID Live Review: Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner & Sufjan Stevens - Sydney Opera House (28.05.12)

This was always going to be an experience. When you look at the calibre of musicians and songwriters, then throw in an amazing four piece orchestra in the Orava String Quartet and then a seven piece trombone section, this was no ordinary music concert. It was going to be an aural experience.

Vivid LIVE announces plans for its 2012 edition

Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz (2010 LP)

Sufjan Stevens is a storyteller, a bard singing the myths and histories of his land. Much of Stevens' previous work is usually described best as being born out of the American folk tradition, telling tales of experiences, towns and cities; real places and real people.
